The concentrated time spent during the summer Band Camp is vital to the success of the season. Band Camp is kept on campus and is when students learn the majority of their marching routines, show music, pep band tunes and the SDOHS fight song. Camp is held the last two weeks in July, right before school starts. Attendance is MANDATORY in order to have a competitive spot in the show. Those who do not attend will be placed on “alternate” status.
At Band Camp, students don’t only learn the fundamentals of the show, they are also establishing friendships, bonding as a band family and partaking in traditions that have been around for years! What a great way to start the school year with 175+ new friends! Marching band is not an indoor activity. Students must be prepared to be outside during high temps. Students are required to wear a plain white shirt (no tank tops allowed), respectable length black shorts (no short booty shorts), and tennis shoes (no flip-flops!).
In addition, students will need the following items during camp:
First time students sometimes question their desire to join a marching band after the first day in the heat. Encourage them to stick with it for a few more days. Students often change their mind once they get accustomed to the program, adapt to the heat, start making friends and begin feeling more confident.
